As we approach the close of 2023, it’s that time of the year for my annual tradition – revealing the top 5 smartphones. Before we dive in, a quick heads up: I’ve had the chance to explore numerous smartphones this year, but there might be some not featured on this list. No worries, we can still be buddies! Now, this list isn’t ranked; I’m just sharing my top 5 favorites. Stay tuned till the end of the year for a TechVS-style collaboration with all my tech-savvy readers, where I’ll spill the beans on my daily drivers going into 2024. Make sure you’re subscribed icon for the latest updates.
Which is the best phone to buy in 2023?
Starting off with my top pick for this year’s favorite iPhone, it’s the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
1. iPhone 15 Pro Max
This smartphone stands out for its impressive display, solid build quality, and consistently excellent cameras, especially for video recording. The 5x zoom feature is great for portraits, and the new A17 Pro chipset, the industry’s first 3nm on a smartphone, enables console-level gaming. Finally, the inclusion of USB Type-C, though long overdue, is a welcome change, reducing the need for multiple cables.
Despite initial reports of overheating issues, a software update has largely addressed this concern. The new action button and dynamic island feature, while present, aren’t as practical in day-to-day use.
The iPhone 15 Pro is quite similar but lacks the 5x telephoto camera. While the iPhone 15 gets an honorable mention, it doesn’t make the list due to its similarities with the iPhone 14 Pro, featuring the same A16 Bionic chip, a 60Hz display (not ProMotion), no telephoto camera, and a less premium build compared to the Pro models.
2. Google Pixel 8 Pro
Now, moving on from Apple, let’s talk about the Google Pixel 8 Pro, listed here in no specific order. Traditionally, Pixel Pro devices have been good but sometimes had cutbacks compared to the competition. However in 2023, Pixel 8 Pro is a true flagship, standing strong against its rivals. It boasts an exceptional display, one of the brightest at 2,400 nits, and top-notch cameras with Google’s processing. While some may find Google’s processing a bit much, I personally love it, especially for its excellent dynamic range.
Being a Google product, you get the clean Android experience and a promise of seven years of OS and security updates – though we’ll have to wait and see if Google delivers on this commitment. The Pixel 8 Pro offers unique AI software features like Magic Editor, Audio Magic Eraser, and the favorite, Best Take, not found on most other devices. Some of these features take time to process since they involve cloud processing. The Tensor G3 is sufficient for day-to-day tasks but may not match up to the high performance of other flagship devices.
The phone includes a temperature sensor, a feature I’ve only used for reviewing and haven’t touched since. While the Pixel 8 Pro’s price has increased compared to the Pixel 7 Pro from 2022, Google has introduced some compelling deals, like getting a free Pixel Watch 2 with the purchase of a Pixel 8 Pro. 3. Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra
The third smartphone on my list is the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, released in 2023. Despite looking similar to its predecessor, it remains a top choice with a great display, impressive cameras, and the new Snapdragon 822. The battery life is solid, and the inclusion of the S-Pen sets it apart. While other devices excel in certain areas, like display quality, the upcoming S24 Ultra is expected to bring improvements. If you’re considering the S23 Ultra, it’s still a good choice, especially with available deals. Honorable mentions go to the more affordable S23 and S23 Plus, offering many features of the S23 Ultra at a lower price. Now, let’s move on to my last two picks.
4. Honor Magic V2
While the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a solid foldable option with excellent multitasking software, it didn’t make my list. The Honor Magic V2, in my opinion, leads in foldable hardware. Weighing just 231 grams and under 10 millimeters thin when folded, it provides a seamless experience, avoiding compromises. The display is not narrow, and both screens support 120 hertz. Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, it boasts a large 5,000 milliamp hour battery with 66-watt charging. Although not widely available in the west yet, it’s expected to launch in the coming months, and I’m eagerly anticipating the next version of the Honor Magic V2.
5. OnePlus Open or OPPO Find N3
Finally, there’s the OnePlus Open or OPPO Find N3, depending on your region. While not as compact as the Honor Magic V2, it remains relatively compact for a foldable, offering no compromises. The device features a usable cover display, resembling a regular smartphone, and boasts one of the brightest displays with 2800 nits peak brightness and a 120Hz refresh rate on both the cover and folding displays. As a OnePlus device, it excels in specs, including 16GB RAM, 512GB storage, Wi-Fi 7, and 8 Gen 2. The flagship cameras, 67W fast charging, and impressive canvas-style multitasking enhance its appeal.
Some Other notable foldable Smartphones:
On the foldable side, honorable mentions go to the Google Pixel Fold for its nice attempt, although it needs hardware improvements, and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, almost making the top 5 with its large usable cover display and affordable price in the US. The Motorola RAZR 40 Ultra, while a great flip smartphone, lags with 2022 chip and less sturdy hinge compared to the Z Flip 5.
Other notable smartphones in 2023 include the OnePlus 11, Honor Magic 5 Pro, ROG Phone 7 Ultimate for gaming, and the Zenbone 10, recognized as the best compact phone.
Conclusion:
As we wrap up 2023, the standout smartphones include the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Pixel 8 Pro, and Galaxy S22 Ultra. In the world of foldables, the Honor Magic V2 and OnePlus Open/OPPO Find N3 catch attention with their cool designs and strong features. Special mentions go to the Google Pixel Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. This year brings a bunch of choices, from gaming-focused gadgets like the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate to the handy Zenbone 10, making it a thrilling time for tech fans. Cheers to a year of cool tech, and let’s see what surprises 2024 has in store!
